Abstract

The following text aims to build a bridge between an open and dynamic concept of culture and the practical work of intercultural service providers. Implications of a non-essentialist understanding of culture for intercultural practice are discussed. In the context of an interaction-oriented and power-sensitive approach of intercultural communication the article pays special attention to the goals of intercultural consulting and suggests a predominantly process-oriented course of action. The main goal of intercultural consulting is hence to help people and organisations in designing processes of discursive negotiations and to support the ‚discursive competence‘ of organisations and its members sustainably. After introducing and explaining the concept and its prerequisites, ‚discursive competence‘ is classified as one of the most central key compenteces in the 21st century.
